Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
