Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
